Some men are doing well regarding their testosterone levels. With this I mean total testosterone or TT. However, sometimes SYMPTOMS arise because of high SHBG levels, the transporter protein that binds to testosterone levels.

The matter of fact is: free testosterone is not all that matters, which I will explain in a future email (perhaps tomorrow). See keep tuned, because this is an interesting topic!

What is free testosterone in the first place?

Free Testosterone is testosterone that is unbound, meaning that it is able to bind to the androgen receptor. The main protein that binds to T is SHBG or Sex Hormone Binding Globulin, which is produced in the liver.

➤When SHBG is HIGH, Free T is LOW

So by lowering SHBG, we can liberate more T and experience more of the benefits of testosterone. This is in particular helpful during winter time as men tend to have lower T levels both total and free.

➤To get that androgenic boost of free testosterone you can do the following, it is quite easy:

#1 MINERALS

Minerals like magnesium, boron and zinc are all associated with lower SHBG levels and more free testosterone. This means that you can enjoy cacao, raisins or grapes, and red meat every single day!

#2 DIET ESSENTIALS

Getting in enough protein (about 30% of daily calories) is associated with more FREE T. However more than >40% will plummet free T. Extra tip: get a lot of your protein from gelatin and collagen, which is found in broth, bone marrow or collagen powder. Also get the right amount of fiber. Too much fiber is associated with elevated SHBG levels.

#3 LIFESTYLE ESSENTIALS

Being physically active and having enough sun exposure creates the perfect hormonal environment for free T levels. Vitamin D was shown to increase TT and FT, but in men with low levels of D.

#4 APIGENIN

Apigenin, a flavonoid found in herbs such as chamomile, parsley, cilantro, celery and white button mushrooms - has anti aromatase, stress & estrogen lowering qualities benefiting free testosterone levels.

#5 HERBS

Herbal supplements like shilajit, Tongkat Ali and nettle root extract are safe to gently increase free T levels.
