Creatine Causing Hair Loss?

The creatine-causing-hair-loss myth is something wildly talked about. The reasoning for creatine causing hair loss is the same reason why people believe that DHT causes the hair follicles to thin.

Creatine does increase the ratio of testosterone to DHT. So does exercising and lifting weights increase that conversion.

From the study

"After 7 days of creatine loading, or a further 14 days of creatine maintenance dose, serum T levels did not change. However, levels of DHT increased by 56% after 7 days of creatine loading and remained 40% above baseline after 14 days maintenance . The ratio of DHT:T also increased by 36% after 7 days creatine supplementation and remained elevated by 22% after the maintenance dose."

So does creatine increase Hair Loss?

No

Does DHT causes hair loss?

Also no.

Even IF the hormone DHT would cause hair loss, creatine wouldn't have any effect on that as:

SHBG levels would rise and bind the excessive circulating DHT
Rise in serum DHT levels don't equal rising DHT in tissues such as the prostate and scalp

There are other and more real mechanisms that cause hair loss which we will discuss further down in this mail.

How much creatine should you take?

Do we need the supplement creatine?

The body is capable of making creatine by itself, a process that happens in the liver. Creatine is made from glycine, methionine and arginine; amino acids you normally SHOULD get from the diet. This means that meat feasting and maxing on bone broth will provide the necessary building blocks to make creatine.

Creatine has many benefits:

Higher DHT levels (as we discussed above)
Rapidly restocks muscle glycogen levels (this improves growth and recovery)
Improves methylation pathways (which helps with xenoestrogen metabolism!)
Brain power and neuroprotection (creatine fuels the brain with energy)
Boosts dopamine, drive and libido (it does so be careful to not take it in the evening)
Protects against neurological diseases such as Parkinson's and Huntington's

So should you take creatine?

Creatine can be very useful depending on your context. For instance:

- training excessively will require more creatine.

- long term sleep deprivation is another indication for creatine usage.

- detoxification of xenoestrogens is another one...

In general I do not advise taking creatine long term because of the potential side effects?

Side Effects of Creatine?

Taking large amounts of creatine shuts down your own production! This means that when you stop taking creatine, the body needs time to adapt to produce its own creatine again.

This process can make you depressed and low dopamine, because the body is so used to extra ordinary amounts of exogenous creatine, it starts operate at a higher level.

Your liver produces anywhere from 1-2grams of creatine per day.

Most people who take creatine, take 5 grams a day which is 5 to 2.5x more than what your liver makes.

So What Causes Hair Loss?

Men who experience hair loss show the same characteristics:

They all have chronically elevated stress hormones such as cortisol and estrogen.

When cortisol rises, estrogen rises too; and vice versa, estrogen triggers more cortisol.

Men with male pattern baldness (MPB) show a decrease in circulation due to tension in the galea. This decrease in circulation atrophies the hair follicles. When there is tension, oxygen saturation drops and DHT rises in RESPONSE to low O2.

Bald men had calcified scalps, this is shown in cadaver studies, & balding heads have higher concentrations of free fatty acids (FFA's) and prostaglandins.

High levels of prolactin were also detected in hair loss.
